The Granny Groups model is based on building up leaders from within Granny Groups to train their fellow members. To do this, we developed a unique program called the Trainer of Trainers Program (TOT). Each Granny Group elects three members of their group to receive training to learn vital skills. These skill areas include: improved agriculture, vocational skills, leadership training, grief counseling, importance of HIV/AIDS testing and treatment, business skills, and accounting for microfinance loans. When the trainers return, they are able to spread their knowledge to their group. We believe that empowering members of our Granny Groups to share knowledge ensures that we are respecting the culture and dignity of the grandmothers in our groups. Our goal is to help elderly impoverished grandmothers in rural Uganda become more community-reliant moving forward.
