“We will not rest until our Grandmothers do.” - Jackson Kaguri

Nyaka is committed to serving the poorest of the poor orphans and Grandmothers in Uganda. Although we are helping hundreds of children and their families break the cycle of systemic deprivation and poverty, there are millions more.

Below are just some examples of the expenses we encounter while performing our mission. We hope this will help you understand how important your donation is to meeting the most basic needs the poorest orphans of Nyaka and Kutamba:

$25 Provides a school uniform, shoes, socks, underwear for one child to attend school

$45 Provides a mat, blanket, pillow (for cold Ugandan nights) and mosquito net to prevent malaria for one child

$150 Funds a micro-finance loan for one Grandmother that will help move her closer to economic independence

$150 Pays one month’s salary for one teacher

$250 Provides one year of primary school education for one student, including medical tests, food and clothing

$250 Builds a latrine (outhouse) to increase overall health and sanitation for a host family

$500 Sends one child to secondary school to continue their studies

One of the harshest realities for the girls of Nyaka and Kutamba is that when they reach puberty, their chances of dropping out of school skyrockets. Why? For the simple fact that they have no feminine hygiene protection.

Without appropriate feminine hygiene protection (they often need to use banana leaves), they cannot comfortably attend school. If they cannot attend school one week per month, it becomes impossible for them to pass their exams, which is required to move to the next level. This is devastating for our girls who study so hard and love to attend school.

Thanks to the micro-finance program, several Nyaka Grandmothers are now producing sanitary pads using locally purchased materials for the students and faculty of Nyaka, as well as other women in the surrounding community.

This innovative approach to solving a long-standing issue for the girls of Nyaka is just another example of our commitment to keeping our girls in school, creating economic independence for the Grandmothers, and breaking the cycle of systemic deprivation and poverty for the people of Uganda.
