Vocational Training Program

Mastering a trade is another way our students can break free from poverty. For those students who wish to pursue a trade, we will be rolling out a 2-year Vocational Training Program in the near future.  This will offer Nyaka graduates a place to concentrate and become expert at one of several trades that are integral to life in rural Uganda.

An informal vocational program has been a part of The Nyaka AIDS Orphans Project since its inception. In addition to teaching graduates a livable trade, a part of the program also teaches our Nyaka and Kutamba students to learn how to cook, clean, cut hair, sew, make brick stoves, and fix chairs and desks.  Below is a short list of programs that are being developed.

Tailoring
All Nyaka and Kutamba students wear school uniforms. Over the years we have paid a local tailor to make these uniforms. However, now many of our children are old enough to sit on a sewing machine and learn to sew.  This is an opportunity for them to learn a trade, a skill that would provide income if needed in the future.  If the students wish, they can choose after graduation to complete a two year course in tailoring. It is our desire that these graduates will make our children’s uniforms and other schools to make their uniforms too.  We would like to buy more tailoring machines and have all P5 –p7 children learn how to sew.

Brick Making and Brick Laying
Since Nyaka’s inception we have started and completed many projects which are built with bricks. We would like to launch a program where our own graduates, who wish to learn a trade, make bricks that will be used in our future projects and in repairs. Extras can be sold to other institutions and local people for income. In the near future we hope that our granny houses will be built by our own graduates.

Carpentry
Every day our children sit on benches and desks and our teachers use office tables and chairs, as do all local area schools. We plan to launch a carpentry training program that teaches students how to repair benches, desks, and tables.  We also hope to bring in international interns and volunteer to teach our students unique designs which will allow them to learn a trade that results in supplying the public with unique furniture and an earned income.

More to come
As time and resources allow, we plan on adding other trade skills to the program, such as milling and agriculture, as well as driving and mechanics.

Our two year Vocational Training Program facilities will be located near Desire Farm.
