Micro-Finance Program
The Micro-finance Program was launched in 2006 with the objective of providing access to credit for income-generating activities to the women caring for the orphans of Nyaka and Kutamba. This program continues to aim at improving caretakers' incomes as numerous studies have shown that women tend to prioritize children's nutrition, education, clothing, health, and home improvements ahead of their own personal needs.
As a result of improved standards of living at home, Nyaka and Kutamba students are able to maintain the necessary good health and morale in order to complete their primary education. Click to read more about the Micro-finance Program.
The Nyaka Grandmothers' Basket Parties
Thanks to micro-finance loans, many of our Grandmothers are able to buy supplies to make beautiful woven baskets and other crafts as a source of income. Women across America are holding "Nyaka Grandmothers' Basket Parties” that help spread information to others about the Grandmothers Program in a fun and informative way. Other Types of Income Generating Work
The Grandmothers of Nyaka also garden and sew. Although many of the Grandmothers are over 50 (which is considered old age in Uganda), they walk to work each day, knowing their contribution will help put food on their family’s table. View the video of the Grandmothers sowing a new crop.
