Primary Education - The Nyaka Model

The Nyaka AIDS Orphans Project Primary Education Model, which serves levels Preschool - Primary 7, is an award-winning model. In 2010, it achieved 8th place in academic performance among 220 other schools in the Kanungu District. It is one of only 4 schools in Uganda selected to partner with the International School of Uganda in Kampala on a program developed by Harvard University to improve the way children learn.

The Nyaka AIDS Orphans Project is unique in that it guarantees from the time a student enters into preschool that as long as students continue to pass national exams, their education will be paid for up to the university level.

Kutamba School
Date opened: February, 2009
Location: Village of Nyakishenyi, Rukungiri District, near the border of the Kanungu District where Nyaka is located (map it)

About Kutamba:
People in this very remote and rural area are even poorer and more destitute than in the Kanungu District. Many children in Kutamba live alone, with aged grandmothers, or other relatives who have no way of supporting them, let alone send them to school. A student named Hilary walked 50km to ask us to assist him and the other children of Kutamba.  As a result, we could no longer ignore the cries of this community, so desperate for assistance.

We are proud to report that this school was designed and built with help from Architecture for Humanity and is considered one of the best constructed schools in Western Uganda. It continues to grow with strong support and oversight from its local management committee and community.
