"It takes children to raise a village." - J. Kaguri
In 2008, Nyaka School graduated its first class and nearly every student scored a B+ or better on national exams. The success of these children, who live where the odds are stacked so heavily against them, shows what the power of collaboration can do.
Community integration is critical to the success of Nyaka and Kutamba Schools. Our mutually beneficial projects always involve key members of the community. For example, our Community AIDS Education and Outreach Program educates and informs everyone in the villages about the effects of AIDS and teaches them how to prevent the spread of HIV. The Blue Lupin Community Library is open to all and the Farm and Vocational Center, now under construction, will be a major employer in the community.
Holistic approach adds value to the community
The Community AIDS Education and Outreach Program is put on by the Nyaka Anti-AIDS children’s choir. The children perform songs, skits, and distribute literature during their performances. Read more.
Thanks to a grant funded by the Blue Lupin Foundation through the Stephen Lewis Foundation, Nyaka has opened The Blue Lupin Community Library, the first community library in the Kanungu District. Before the opening of the library, access to literary materials was non-existent. Printed materials are rare and the internet is not available in rural Uganda. The Library has enhanced the quality of life not only for the Nyaka students, but the entire community. Read more.
The Farm and Vocational Training Center will provide training for Nyaka and Kutamba graduates as well as local community residents. It will offer agricultural extension services through demonstration gardens and farms. It will also be a commerce center for the community and provide opportunities for volunteering. Read more.
Our goal
- To sustain a local community that cares for HIV/AIDS orphans and to grow a global community committed to counteracting pervasive hunger, poverty, and systemic deprivation in rural Uganda.
