Support Groups
Emotionally vulnerable grandmothers are recruited by our trained grandmothers to join the support groups
that run twice a month. In these groups, grandmothers meet others who have family members infected with
HIV or who have died from AIDS. They also meet others who are struggling to raise orphaned grandchildren.
The support group offers a place to share stories, gain advice, and speak openly about their difficulties.
The Life of a Grandmother at Nyaka
Mrs. Oliver B.'s story is similar to so many women throughout Uganda. She is an 80 year-old
widow from Nyaka. She currently has ten orphans living with her in her home. The eldest is
17 years-old while the youngest is 3 years. The first six orphans came into her home after
the death of her son and two daughters. A few years later, Oliver's only employed son, a
primary head teacher died after a long illness leaving behind a sickly, unemployed widow
with four children. These four orphans joined the others to bring her household to ten orphans.
They live in miserable conditions with no domestic necessities like blankets, plates, clothes, etc...
